The index shed around 20% each in 2000 and 2001. A small gain in 2002 was followed by a huge upswing (73%) in 2003.
In terms of absolute numbers, 2006 is the BEST year as the index gained a whopping 4,389 points - the nearest being a gain of 2,795 points in 2005.
WINNERS & LAGGARDS
Reliance Communications, the latest entrant in the Sensex 30 stocks, is the top gainer in the index this year. The stock was included in the Sensex on June 12, and has since more than doubled to Rs 471 today - up 128%.
ACC follows with an astounding gain of 103% at Rs 1,086 followed by Grasim (101%), Bharti Airtel (82%) and Gujarat Ambuja (78%).
Infosys, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Dr.Reddy's and BHEL have appreciated over 50% each.
There were only two losers this year. Reliance Energy shed 14% to close at Rs 520, and Hero Honda dropped 11% to Rs 762.
