ITC, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), and Sterlite, which have set up units in the industrial estate of Haridwar, are now seeking more land for expansion.

The three companies are ready to invest Rs 200-500 crore at the integrated industrial estate of Haridwar, where approximately only 80 acres of land is available with the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd (Sidcul).

With the state government trying to expedite matters related to land allotment to industry in the state in the wake of its new policy, these companies are competing with each other to get maximum land.

But top officials today said the government had told firms seeking more land to scale down their demand so as to accommodate more proposals. In this regard, the government convened a meeting with top executives of these companies.

“We have asked them to bring down their requirement,” said Industry Secretary P C Sharma.

So far, Sidcul has received nearly 80 proposals for Haridwar, where firms are seeking land either for setting up units or for expansion. Leading the pack, ITC, HUL and Sterlite are seeking nearly 10-20 acres.

Chief Minister B C Khanduri has made it clear that firms providing maximum employment and revenue to Uttarakhand would be given preference in the allotment of industrial plots and that the allotments would be done on the basis of case-by-case studies of various proposals.

In the new land allotment policy announced in July, the government had set up a committee headed by the chief minister to clear industrial proposals.

After declaring its land allotment policy, Sidcul invited proposals with July 31 as a deadline. It received nearly 106 proposals but so far no decision has been taken. Sources said of those, nearly 80 have come for Haridwar.
