The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) has named Biocon chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on its board of trustees.

“We are honoured to have her serve on USP’s Board of Trustees, where her leadership and expertise will be utilised to help guide the organisation as it advances its mission to improve the health of people around the world through public standards and related programmes that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods,” said Roger L Williams, chief executive officer of USP in a statement issued today.

Shaw is the second non-US member of the USP Board of Trustees.

USP is a scientific nonprofit organisation that develops standards for the identity, strength, quality and purity of medicines, medicinal ingredients, botanical medicinal ingredients, dietary supplements, food ingredients and compounded medicines manufactured, prepared, distributed and consumed worldwide.

Biocon, which was set up in 1978 as an industrial enzymes company, has evolved into a fully integrated biopharmaceutical enterprise under the leadership of Shaw.
