Power generation at the Ib Valley thermal power station of the state owned Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) was affected due to leakage in the boiler tube of its second unit (220 MW).

“Power generation has been stopped from Saturday evening after a leakage was detected in the boiler tube of the second unit,” said a top OPGC official.

The unit is likely to be synchronised by late evening, added the official. It may be noted that OPGC runs two units of thermal power with a capacity of 210 MW each at Ib valley near Jharsuguda. The entire generation from OPGC is fed to the state grid on the basis of a long-term power purchase agreement. OPGC, presently, is planning to add another 1,320 MW to its Ib valley station. The expansion project which involved adding two units of 660 MW each is taken up at a cost of around Rs 10,000 crore. The expansion is expected to be completed during the 12th Plan (2012-17) period.

OPGC has been allotted two coal blocks- Manoharpur and Dip-side Manoharpur in Sundergarh district.
