BorgWarner Inc., a US-based $4 billion auto component and systems manufacturing company, today inaugurated its new plant at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The company had invested around Rs 30 crore and in the new plant, according to senior official of the company.
Tim Manganello, chairman and chief executive officer, BorgWarnr Inc said BorgWarner Cooling Systems India (P) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BorgWarner Inc., started its Indian operations in 2001 as a sales office that imported products which helped in thermal management of engines used in SUVs and heavy vehicles. Subsequently, in 2004, the company set up an interim manufacturing facility at Ayanambakkam, Chennai.
“With the Indian market presently around Rs 100 crore and set to grow 10- 12 per cent for these products, it became clear that BorgWarner had to set up a full-fledged plant in India to cater to the domestic customers,” he said. The new plant at SIPCOT Industrial Park spread over 6.3 acres, will have a manufacturing capacity of 300,000 assemblies a year, now and will manufacture Viscous Fan drives, fans and a few other thermal management products from the company’s main stable. Optimum cooling of the engine under all conditions, lowering the noise levels, increasing fuel economy are just a few of the beneficial features of this fan drive developed by BorgWarner. The plant has sufficient room for expansion in the future, he added.
“Our target for the present year is around Rs 65 crore for the present year,” said Manganello.
BorgWarner Cooling Systems India (P) Ltd today services Tata Motors, Tata Cummins, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Force Motors, Volvo - Eicher Commercial Vehicles, Asia Motor Works, Kirloskar, to name a few. The company clocked a turnover of Rs 49 crore in the last financial year and is expecting to reach Rs 65 crore this year.
