The country's registered a growth of 24.5% in broadband subscribers in 2011, one of the fastest across the globe, a Broadband Forum study today said.

It also predicted that the nation is poised to become one of the top 10 countries in terms of user base this year after clinching 11th rank in the global pecking order.

India is estimated to have added 2.62 million new broadband users in 2011, taking its total base to 13.33 million.

"Demand in India is increasing rapidly, particularly as more coverage and competitive pricing has meant that much of the urban population now has the chance to access the internet via broadband," Broadband Forum Chief Executive Officer Robin Mersh said.

He said that the main impediments (in India) still remain cost and urban-rural divide, which is of course, still an issue in many countries.

Mersh added that service providers in India are, however, well aware of these concerns and are beginning to address the rural opportunity with a number of projects driven by highly innovative and active companies and government support.

Among the largest broadband users in the world, China boasted the largest broadband user base in 2011 with 158.19 million users, while US and Japan followed with 91.63 million and 36.69 million users, respectively.

While the global growth rate for broadband connections stood at 12.3%, which is the highest annual increase in the last five years, India's stellar growth rate in broadband user base in 2011 was helped by competitive pricing of services and devices.

Overall, broadband growth in 2011 is estimated at 65.49 million subscribers, bringing the global total internet users to 597.32 million.

"This is an exciting return to higher growth figures and points to a strengthening in the broadband market. With a number new markets coming online, we are seeing broadband move into the daily lives of more and more people the world over.

Much of this is fuelled by exceptional growth in some key markets, including exceptional growth in India, making it one of the fastest growing markets in the world today," Mersh said.

Among other BRIC countries, Russia with the highest growth rate of 36.85% had 20.74 million broadband users in 2011. Brazil, which stood ninth in the global pecking order, registered a growth of 19.3%.

The total broadband user base in the Latin American country stood at 16.48 million.
