British Gas elevates gas veteran to India head

Shaleen Sharma is a known figure in the oil and gas circles in India and overseas. On July 1, 2007, he took charge of Gujarat Gas Company Ltd (GGCL) — one of the largest city gas distribution (CGD) companies in India —as its managing director, and brought the BG Group-owned company on a fast track in terms of growth and customer reach.

Sharma, who holds an MBA degree from Lucknow, has now been elevated from his current position to be the India head of British Gas (BG). Before being posted as MD at GGCL, he served as director of commercial operations at the company. Under Sharma's leadership, GGCL achieved important milestones, with its consolidated turnover rising from Rs 936.5 crore in 2006 to Rs 1,813.6 crore in 2012 and total gas sales volumes soaring from 1,088 million standard cubic meters (mscm) in 2006 to a total gas sales of 1212 mmscm in 2012. The pipeline network expanded from 2,100 in 2006 to 3500 km.

Sharma has over 31 years of experience, mainly in the field of natural gas sector and has worked with several industry majors like ONGC, GAIL and Petronet LNG before joining BG in 2000. He is also responsible for the finalisation and execution of the first long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement with RasGas Qatar. At BG, Sharma has been associated with a number of important assignments in core businesses, including LNG marketing, Panna-Mukta and Tapti (PMT) joint venture (as BG's representative on the joint venture's operator board) and direct marketing of PMT gas.
