Car majors manage to retain sales tempo

Maruti Udyog posted 3.2 per cent rise in total sales to 50,109.
 
Leading car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd today reported 3.2 per cent rise in total sales of 50,109 units in January 2006 against 48,544 units sold in same month last year.
 
Sales in the domestic markets in January increased 7.1 per cent to 48,526 units against 45,300 units in the corresponding period in 2005, a company release said.
 
However, exports declined 51.2 per cent at 1583 units compared with 3244 units. Sales of the A segment car Maruti 800 also decreased 14.2 per cent at 8262 units in first month of 2006 versus 9625 units in same month last year.
 
Sales of the B and B+ segment cars such as Alto, WagonR, Zen and Swift grew 21.2 per cent to 31,539 units for the month compared with 26,016 units in January 2005.
 
General Motors India has reported a near flat sales at 2592 units in January against 2586 units in the same month a year ago. The company said the sales included 1990 units of Chevrolet Tavera, at a growth of nine per cent and 602 units of the sedan Optra.
 
Honda Siel Cars Ltd (HSCI), manufacturer of premium and luxury cars in India, registered a growth of 21 per cent in sales in January 2006 over its performance in January 2005.
 
The company sold 4,570 cars during the month compared with 3,779 cars sold during the corresponding month last year. A company release said that the sales of City ZX range has also grown over 27 per cent.
 
Ford India has reported a 124 per cent growth in January 2006. With a good response for the newly launched Ford Fiesta, the company reported sales of 5,173 units compared with 2,307 units sold during the corresponding period last year.
 
The company said that it has received over 9000 bookings for the Fiesta till date. Ford India commenced shipment of Fiesta in the last week of December 2005 and over 6,250 units of Fiesta have been delivered to dealerships across the country.
