CCIC plans franchise outlets in states to promote handicrafts

State-owned Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India (CCIC) would be opening franchise outlets in different states, including Kerala and Goa in a bid to increase sales of handicrafts in the country.

"We are in talks with various state governments to open franchise outlets," CCIC Managing Director M A Ibrahimi said.

CCIC outlets are planned in Rajasthan, West Bengal, Kerala, Goa and Madhya Pradesh and are expected to come up in a year.

In addition, CCIC is also planning to open at least one outlet in each state, he told reporters here today.

The corporation has also chalked out plans to cash on the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, which is expected to attract a large number of foreigners.

Ibrahimi said CCIC is planning to set up kiosks in the Games stadia where village Handicraft items and apparels bearing logo of the Games will be put on display during the mega event scheduled in October next year.

Currently, CCIC has branches in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore and franchises in Gurgaon, Patna, Rajgir and Copenhagen (Denmark).

Meanwhile, Textiles Secretary Rita Menon inaugurated "Mughal Art in Indian Crafts", an exhibition showcasing products like crafted furniture, wall hangings and gift items.
