State revives Vijayawada airport expansion plan after 6 years
Giving a boost to air connectivity to one of the important Tier II cities in Andhra Pradesh, the state Cabinet on Friday decided to acquire 492 acres of additional land for the expansion of the airport in Vijayawada. The state government had signed an MoU with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in 2007 for the upgradation of this airport but nothing much happened in the last six years. Reviving the agreement, the government would now acquire the land and transfer the same to AAI free of cost for expanding the facility.

The government has accorded sanction for Rs 110.91 crore towards the cost of land acquisition. Except around 60 acres of government land, the rest of the area identified for the expansion falls in private patta lands, according to minister DK Aruna.

Land for Ocean Technology Institute
The state Cabinet also approved a proposal to allot 109 acres of land to the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai, to set up research facilities along the coastline in Nellore district. Close to 600 acres would be allotted for setting up industrial parks in the same district.

The Cabinet also decided to approach the World Bank for Rs 1,000 crore loan for reconstruction works in areas damaged by cyclones in 2009 and 2010. She said the Cabinet also cleared a proposal to fill 5,000 government posts, including the existing vacancies, across various departments soon.
