The future of New Chandigarh Industrial Policy, which was drafted after 25 years from the time the earlier industrial policy was framed, seems to be caught in uncertainty.

The new industrial policy framed by the Union Territory (UT) administration envisaged promoting micro, medium and small industries in Chandigarh.

However, the new industrial policy failed to cut ice with the various industrial associations in Chandigarh which had been opposing it.

Vinod Mittal, president, Chamber of Chandigarh Industries, said that the Chandigarh Industrial policy was slated to be implemented in August; however, it still awaited execution.

Even as no official word has come on implementation of the much-awaited Chandigarh Industrial Policy, the association believes that the policy has been delayed due to sustained pressure by various industrial associations of Chandigarh that vehemently opposed the policy in the present format.

Meanwhile the UT officials could not be contacted for their comments. Repeated calls to District Industries Centre (DIC) Director-cum-GM Vandana Disodia and Home Secretary Ram Niwas remained unanswered.

Vinod Mittal said that the delay in implementation of the policy vindicated the stand adopted by various industrial associations in Chandigarh which had been opposing the policy tooth and nail.

He added that the industrial policy in the present format failed to solve the genuine demands of industries in the region and as such the purpose of such a policy seemed defeated.

One of the demands of the industrialists was that they wanted the administration to allow conversion of lease-hold industrial plot to free-hold. But it is yet to fix the conversion fee.

Also, with no scope of horizontal expansion for industries in the region owing to limited area, industries had demanded increase in Floor Area Ratio (FAR) ratio.
