The $1.2 billion Kunming Iron & Steel Group Co (Kisco), the largest iron and steel complex in Yunnan province, is toying with the idea of setting up a cold rolling plant in India. |
Wang Changyong, president, said the company is in talks with some Indian companies for partnering Kisco in the project. |

Chanyong was in India as part of the 76-member Chinese delegation to attend the India-China business conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). |

Changyong said the potential in India was immense, given the abundant natural resources and Kisco was planning to tap this resource. |

Kisco, which operates a three million tonne plant in Yunnan, imports four million tonne of iron ore, of which half a million tonne was imported from India. |

Kisco was planning to increase its offtake from India to one million tonne. Changyong said, Kisco was in discussions with some iron ore suppliers, important chambers of commerce as well as MMTC for the purpose. |

On whether Kisco was eyeing a barter arrangement, iron ore for coke with Indian companies, Changyong said, the company would have go in for a bigger permit from its government for the purpose. Currently, Kisco is exporting coke to Vietnam. |

Changyong said, "Coke productivity is our advantage. We produce around two million tonne of coke." |

Industry sources said, foreign steel majors were taking an active interest in India and the low per capita consumption of steel in India was the biggest motivator. |

If the economy was to grow at a steady rate of 8 per cent then steel consumption was also expected to grow at a scorching pace. Over the last year, many major steel companies such as Arcelor and Posco had expressed interest in India. |
