CIL Q1 production flat at 102.87 MT, misses target

Officials suggest that rain had affected both production and off-take in last month

At a time state-run coal major drawing flak from all quarters for coal shortages across the country, state-owned Coal India (CIL) today reported a near flat production for the quarter ended June 31, 2013 at 102.87 million tonnes (MT) against the corresponding period of last fiscal.

In the April-June quarter last fiscal, CIL's output stood at 102.4 MT. CIL also missed the first quarter's production target of 106.88 MTs and could achieve 96% of the same.

Officials suggested, rain had affected both the production and off-take in the last month. It produced 32.57 million tonnes (MT) of coal in June, missing the month's target of 35.23 MT. CIL's offtake in June was 37.09 MT against the target of 39.85 MT.

CIL's offtake for the quarter stood at 115.25 MT, registering a growth of 2% compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal. The off-take target for the quarter was set at 120.79 MT, 95%  of which has been met.

As per the MoU between CIL and Coal ministry, production and of-take targets for the state-miner were set at 482 MT and  492 MT respectively.
