Striking workers at the Cochin Port called off their protest on Wednesday after a single judge bench of the Kerala High Court directed the Cochin Port Trust to continue operations at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal for the next three months.
The court direction came in the wake of the eight-days-long strike by workers at Cochin Port. A coordination committee of various trade unions had called for a strike demanding job protection for workers of the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal.
They had alleged that port workers would be deprived of work once the terminal operation is shifted to the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam.
Justice PN Raveendran directed the Port to settle the issue of the port workers within three months. The court also said the coastal, combi and defence ships should be berthed at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal.
