Low cost carrier Air Carnival today launched operations with its maiden flight from Coimbatore to Chennai.

The airline plans to focus on short haul services with its ATR72-500 aircraft. The promoters are infusing around $12 million to take three aircraft on lease.

The carrier charged Re 1 for the first flight. It plans to keep the tariff at Rs 999 for the first three months.

The first flight took off from Coimbatore Airport at 7.30 a.m. and landed at Chennai airport around 9 a.m.

On the first day, its flight route is Coimbatore-Chennai-Madurai-Chennai-Coimbatore.

The airline will have daily service for 10 sectors including 3 daily flights from Chennai to Coimbatore (up and down) and two daily flights from Chennai to Madurai (up and down).

The 70-seater aircraft are more economical for short haul services and they are proven one in India, said Manish Singh, CEO, Air Carnival.

The promoter CMC group plans to infuse around $12-15 million (of which $5 million already invested) initially, which will fund to acquire at least 3-5 aircrafts.
