Tamil Nadu’s engineering capital, Coimbatore, continues to be the top growth cities for online job activities for the fifth month in a row, according to the The Monster Employment Index India, a monthly gauge of online job posting activity by online job portal Monster.com.

The city marked a growth of 35 per cent at 193, of the 13 locations monitored by the index. Kochi registered a growth of 21 per cent and Jaipur posted 17 per cent. Kolkata recorded a negative growth of nine per cent while Chandigarh and Ahmedabad posted a decline of -6 per cent and -4 per cent compared to July, 2011. The National Capital Region registered an annual growth of seven per cent and Bangalore at six per cent.

According to the index, sectors including shipping and marine registered the highest annual growth of 37 per cent with 140 in July, as against 102 during the corresponding period last year. However, BPO and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) recorded a double digit decline at a negative 13 per cent at 100 compared to 115 a year back. The sector “showed steepest annual decline,” compared to earlier periods, said an announcement by the company.

Sanjay Modi, managing director, Monster.com (India/Middle- East/SE Asia), said, “Monster Employment Index growth trend reflects the cautious approach of employers amid the current economic scenario. However, despite the moderate growth, there are sectors that continue to exhibit increased recruitment activity over the year.”

Of the 27 sectors monitored by the index, the 15 sectors which posted growth include printing and packaging (32 per cent), travel and tourism (27 per cent), garments, textiles, leather, gems and jewellery (23 per cent), logistics, courier, freight and transportation (20 per cent), it stated.
