Sales of colour televisions crossed the targeted figure of 2 million in January-March 2003.

The period included the cricket World Cup season, though primaries were affected in March with VAT-wary dealers refusing to stock inventories which could have rolled over to April.

The secretary-general of Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association (Cetma), Suresh Khanna, said reports coming from different manufacturers indicate that sales crossed 20 lakhs, and should be close to 22 lakhs in the first quarter.

Volume sales in the quarter is higher by 57 per cent over sales registered in the January-March period of 2001-02 at 14 lakhs, he added.

Khanna said that the primaries were hit marginally since the dealers refused to pick stock only in the last ten days of March, by when maximum sales had been achieved and the World Cup was almost over.
