Amritsar-based Concorde Agro Sprayers Private Ltd, manufacturers and exporters of implements like sprinklers and sprayers, used in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and gardening, is putting up an integrated unit at Vallah Focal Point (in Amritsar), with an initial investment of around Rs 1.5 crore. The unit is expected to be operational in 2006-07.

Spread over an area of about 2,000 square yards, the new unit will have a production capacity almost twice the combined capacities of the existing ones. At present, the company has four units, engaged in manufacturing tools having a combined capacity to produce about 10,000 units (sprinklers, sprayers and garden tools) per month.

Talking to Business Standard, company spokesman Karam Jit Singh (his father, Gurmat Jit Singh, is the managing director of the firm) said, "There has been significant increase in demand for our products because they are reasonably priced."

Singh said the recent initiatives taken by the Centre to save groundwater from depletion and to check the water level had caused a surge in demand for sprinklers. Compared to North India, there is great demand for sprinklers and its components in southern states. In 2005-06, the company is expecting a 25 per cent increase in sales.

Singh said the sprinkler irrigation system could save 50-70 per cent of the water used, and caused minimal soil erosion. He added the firm handed over samples to Pakistani businessman during IPEX-2005 (Indo-Pak Trade Fair). The latter said they would urge their government to allow the import of sprinklers from India.

Currently the Pakistanis import these at a high cost from China.

The company exports to the Middle East, Thailand, and Africa.
