Engine manufacturer Cummins India Ltd (CIL), which today said it had started producing B Gas International natural gas engines in India, may export these engines in collaboration with Cummins Westport Inc (CWI). |
"We will look at Cummins India as a potential supplier to take the product and sell to other parts of the world," said Cummins Westport Inc General Manager (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Greg Young at the Auto Expo today. |
The idea is to make use of the low manufacturing costs in India. The potential export markets are South America, Eastern Europe and South-East Asia. |
However, Cummins has similar manufacturing facilities in China and Brazil and a final decision to export from India will have to be taken after properly assessing the three facilities. |
The technology for the BGI natural gas engines is provided by CWI. The engines are being manufactured at CIL's facility in Daman. The production capacity is of 2,000 engines a year. |
Young said India not only provided cost benefits but also high-quality manufacturing and relatively cheaper components. |
The company is supplying these new engines to Tata Motors, which installed them on its Starbus, six of which are running on Delhi roads on a trial basis. |
"We are talking to almost all the manufacturers for these engines. We are excited about the BGI range of products since these are the first natural gas engines in India that can power other applications such as concrete mixers and vehicles for commercial operations that need more power than that provided by stoichiometric gas engines," CIL Vice-President (automotive business) Arun Ramachandran said. |
He said the market for alternative fuel was set to grow in India with the increased availability of natural gas resources. |
"With ratings from 150-230 horsepower, BGI lean burn spark-ignited natural gas engine features many proven components and features," he added. |
