Pune-based power generation equipments' manufacturer Cummins India is planning to introduce gensets in the capacity between 5 kw and 12 kw to tap the lower-end market. The gensets will run on multiple fuel options. |
"We are looking at small businesses, small commercial establishments and small home offices as the prospective consumers. The gensets will be introduced in 2007," said Rampraveen Swaminathan, vice-president. |
He said the decision was effected by growing dependence on back up power supply across the country. "The gensets may come with the diesel or LPG option but the price and volume have not yet been decided," he said. |
The company has also taken up major steps on its rental power generators' business by introducing "Power Box" which offers mobility and is a cost effective option for the customers said Swaminathan. |
It is a containerised, complete genset capable of rapid on-site implementation and built-in parallelling features. He said the new concept had a short "time to power" compared with the traditional gensets. "A traditional generator takes three to four days before it starts working while power box can become operational within three to four hours," he said. |
It is a plug and play kind of equipment which is weather proof and high on aesthetics, Swaminathan said. "The product will be useful for the customers who need power during construction work or are awaiting grid power connection. We are also looking at event companies, trade fair organisers or project companies who don't have a power source at the sites where they are working," he said. |
He, however, said one-day users such as marriage parties or consumer exhibitions would not be on the company's radar. |
Approximately 70 per cent of the company's rental genset fleet comprises Power Boxes. The rental business is about seven per cent of the company's entire power generation business. |
"The volume may look small but considering the changing nature of businesses renting gensets, it will open avenues for long term relationships with customers who will buy bigger capacity generator sets," Swaminathan stated. |
