Air Deccan, within hours of opening bookings for Re 1 and Rs 500 air tickets, today sold over 3,300 tickets at Re 1 and 6,500 tickets at Rs 500 each.

The tickets, meant for September and October, were open for Delhi-Bangalore-Delhi, Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Guwahati-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai-Delhi, Delhi-Hyderabad-Delhi, Chennai-Kolkata-Chennai, and Mumbai-Chennai-Mumbai sectors.

The company's call centre claimed that all tickets, bookings for which began at 6.30 am, were sold within a few hours.

An Air Deccan call centre executive said it would be almost impossible to get the low-priced ticket either on the internet, call centre or at ticket counters. There could, however, be some tickets available with the agents.

The airline company had announced on Thursday to offer 3,300 tickets for Re 1 and Rs 6, 500 tickets at Rs 500.

Managing director G R Gopinath said in a media release : "An air ticket for Re 1 plus taxes was our promise to Indians, and every release of new set of tickets brings us closer to the dream of empowering every Indian to fly."

The tickets were booked through the company's website, authorised travel agents, airport counters and call centres.

The budget airline operates 115 flights a day, with a fleet size of five Airbus A-320s and 12 ATR 42s. It has placed order for 62 brand new aircraft - 32 Airbus A-320s and 30 ATR-72-500s.

The new aircraft will be delivered over five years and take up Air Deccan's flights close to 600 per day.
