Devaraja Market " the famous commercial landmark of Mysore " will be renovated at a cost of Rs 20.85 lakh. A proposal to this effect has been drawn up.

The Mysore Area Heritage Task Force (MAHTF) has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh for the renovation project. The rest of the cost will be met by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).

The renovation work will commence in about a week and is likely to be completed before the commencement of the Dasara festivities. The decision was taken at a meeting of the MCC council. It was attended by mayor S Dakshinamurthy and MAHTF commissioner T M Vijaya Bhaskar.

The MCC has suggested to its tenants occupying the market to repair and renovate their shop premises without damaging the historical structure. Over 760 fruit, vegetable vendors and other traders and hawkers are engaged in business in the sprawling market which was modelled on the European markets.

The market building, which is over 100 years old, is located in the heart of Mysore. It has suffered much damage over the years.

The structure needs restoration and repairs in keeping with its architectural style. While a large number of people visit the market in the mornings and evenings, it faces more wear and tear during the festivals when it attracts a huge number of people.

The exclusive market sections for specific items of fruits and vegetables have lost their original look and have now become shopping places for all sorts of items. Besides, it lacks basic amenities for the merchants as well as the general public.

Taking into consideration these problems, the MCC has proposed to develop the market in stages. Its restoration is part of the ongoing efforts to conserve the heritage structures in this Royal City. 5
