Discoms invest Rs 1426 crore on capex

The four distribution companies operating in the state- Central Electricity Supply Utility of Orissa (Cesu), Northern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd (Nesco), Southern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd (Southo) and Western Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd (Wesco) have invested Rs 1425.58 crore on capital expenditure since the privatization of electricity distribution in the state.

Cesu, Nesco, Wesco and Southco have incurred a capital expenditure of Rs 515.73 crore, Rs 394.80 crore, Rs 304.19 crore and Rs 201.86 crore respectively, minister for energy Atanu Sabsyasachi Nayak said in response to a query in the state assembly.

Cesu's revenue income in 2009-10 stood at Rs 1201.16 crore whereas its expenditure was Rs 1218.64 crore. Similarly Nesco's income and expenditure in the last fiscal stood at Rs 983.68 crore and Rs 1012.98 crore respectively.

For Wesco, the income and expenditure were at Rs 1361.30 crore and Rs 1388.94 crore respectively while for Southco, the income was Rs 353.28 crore and expenditure Rs 393.13 crore.The transmission & distribution loss of Cesu, Southco, Wesco and Nesco stood at 39.43 per cent, 48.02 per cent, 34.68 per cent and 32.52 per cent respectively by the end of 2009-10.

The minister said that the distribution companies are taking several steps to reduce T&D loss include upgradation of existing 33/11 KV substations and installation of new 33/11 KV sub stations, installation of new 11 KV/33 KV LT line conductors, load balancing of distribution sub-stations, replacement of bare conductors with aerial bunched cables, installation of LT less distribution transformer and targeting for 100 per cent metering and strengthening of vigilance .
