Dolphin Milk Products Private Limited (Dolphin Dairy), a leading private dairy in the north coastal Andhra Pradesh, is setting up 10 bulk coolers in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts to enhance milk procurement.

"We are setting up 10 bulk coolers, each with a capacity of 2,000-3,000 litres, at an investment of Rs 1 crore," M Appa Rao, chairman and managing director of Dolphin Dairy, told Business Standard. The dairy currently has four milk chilling stations and three bulk coolers in these two districts.

At present, the procurement capacity of Dolphin is 50,000-60,000 litres of milk per day. Rao said that once the 10 bulk coolers were in place, the procurement capacity would be increased to one lakh litres a day. The new bulk coolers would be operational by the end of December this year.

He said the company was also exploring newer markets to sell the excess milk procured from the 10 new bulk coolers following the expansion plans. "We expect to strike a few new deals shortly to sell our milk in bulk quantities," he added.

The dairy currently sells around 10,000 litres of milk per day under its own brand, and supplies around 20,000 litres per day under the 'Vijay' brand. This apart, it supplies around 30,000 litres of milk a day to the Kolkata and Orissa markets.

The company achieved a turnover of Rs 30 crore in the financial year 2005-06 of which sale of milk products like butter milk, curd and energy milk accounted for Rs 5 crore. It plans to close the current financial year with a turnover of Rs 40 crore including Rs 10 crore from sale of milk products.

"We recently completed the construction of a one-tonne-per-day capacity ghee processing plant at an investment of around Rs 25 lakh. The trial production at the plant has already started. We now expect our ghee sales to contribute Rs 4 crore to our turnover," Rao said.

Ghee would be sold under the 'Kreshna' brand. Initially, it would be sold in bulk, and would be available in small sachets by next year, he added.
