Eicher Motors Ltd is gearing up to introduce multi-axle commercial vehicles and plans to consolidate its position in the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) segment in the country.

The company will launch its multi-axle 17-tonne payload Eicher Galaxy in the next one or two months and a bus on the same multi-axle platform. Eicher Motors will also foray into tippers and trailers by the end of the current year.

Last year, around 50,000 HCVs were sold in the country, of which Eicher Motors had a share of 3,000.

"The launch of Eicher Galaxy could be within a month or two. We have had several pilot tests already," said Rakesh Kalra, chief executive, Eicher Motors.

Kalra said the capacity of its Pithampur facility is steadily being increased. "It is a continuous process. Last fiscal year, we manufactured over 16,000 vehicles. Around 20,000 vehicles this year will be a realistic target."

He said with the Golden Quadrilateral project and the east-west corridor coming up, the primary transport will be dominated by the multi-axle segment of vehicles, but this will have a spill-over effect on other segments as well.

"This will in turn feed the secondary (within state) and tertiary (rural) transport segments, that will continue to be dominated by the LCV segment, where we have a share of 34 per cent in the country," said Kalra.

The Eicher Jumbo 20.16, the first HCV launched by Eicher Motors about a year ago, is doing well and will drive growth in the next few years, said G Sekar, general manager, marketing, Eicher Motors, said.

Kalra said the Jumbo has been well accepted by the transport industry and several companies including Patel Roadways, Reliance, Gati and Vijayanand Roadlines have bought the HCV from Eicher Motors.

"We have sold 3,000 vehicles of the Jumbo 20.16 in the past one year, which is a good number considering that it was launched in phases across the country," Sekar said.

Gujarat, he said, accounts for about 10 per cent of the total vehicles sold and is among the top five state in the country as far as the number of units sold.
