We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing a smartphone with the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft all vying for our money. Same for accessories. But when it comes to charging cables, we don’t really think much; we grudgingly accept the dreary, rubbery look of the cable that came with our phone and carry on with our lives.

But one start-up is about to change that.

The team at Esbee Cables wants you to love your charging cable as much as you adore your precious smartphone. They claim to make the world’s first leather charging cable, handcrafted for a premium look and built to be extremely durable.

The start-up’s Kickstarter campaign has already raised $3,345 out of a goal of $15,000. The campaign will run for another 36 days and the minimum pledge to get one is $24. The start-up's co-founder, Moazzam Khan is confident of meeting the target.

Khan’s confidence stems mainly from the meticulous planning that has gone in to ensure the technical aspects of the product are better than the competition. The cable works with iOS, Android, and Windows phones.

Khan is a mechanical engineer by training, and the rest of his team has a similar background. The name of the venture is inspired by Khan’s alma mater, the University of California Santa Barbara.

Khan, who hails from Pakistan, says he works personally with tanneries and craftsmen to ensure each product adheres to strict quality control. The cable is first manufactured in China and then shipped to Pakistan for its external leather casing. The finished product is then sent to the primary market in the US.

This is the start-up’s first Kickstarter campaign, but Khan says they have burning ambition. He cites the success of artisanal shoes start-up Markhor as an example he wishes to emulate.
