Essar Energy commissions Salaya-I power project

Essar Energy Plc announced on Friday that its has fully commissioned its 1200 MW Salaya-I power project in Jamnagar district, with commencement of commercial operations of second 600 MW unit. The first unit of 600 MW had commenced commercial operations in April this year. This takes Essar Energy’s total installed operational power generation capacity to 2,800 MW. Salaya-I, in Gujarat is Essar Energy’s first coal fired power project and has been built with a total investment of US$1.1 billion. Most of the power produced will be sold to the state electricity utility, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd, under a long term contract. This is one of the three power projects which are due to be commissioned by Essar Energy in 2012. The others being the 1,200 MW Mahan-I project and the 510 MW Vadinar P2 project. Together these three projects will add 2,910 MW of capacity and will take Essar Energy’s total installed capacity to 4,510 MW. Naresh Nayyar, CEO Essar Energy, said they were making good progress.
