Essar Steel Ltd, an Essar Group company, has completed capacity expansion at Hazira complex taking the total installed capacity to 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Essar Projects India Limited (EPIL) handed over newly constructed capacity of 5 MTPA to ESL on Wednesday. With the expansion, the total investment in the integrated facilities of Essar Steel at Hazira has risen to Rs 37,500 crore.

Completion of the project with an annual capacity of 10 MTPA makes the Hazira Steel Complex in Gujarat the largest single location flat steel producer in India and the fourth largest single location flat steel producer globally, the company said in a statement.

"We congratulate Essar Projects for this stupendous achievement. EPIL has built these state-of-the-art facilities within the stipulated time. It is heartening to note that all the facilities are functioning efficiently without any problem. This gives us a clear advantage in bringing down our costs and offers us operational flexibility in terms of usage of raw materials and product mix," said Dilip Oommen, CEO, Essar Steel.

When asked about further expansion plans of the company, Oommen informed that the company would first stabilise and consolidate its existing capacity.
