The world's largest helicopter manufacturer, France-based ¤3.21 billion company Eurocopter, which is a wholly-owned arm of global aviation major EADS group, is planning to set up a subsidiary in India, in Bangalore.

It plans to hire "qualified workforce" from the country. India is one of the most promising markets in Asia, and Eurocopter has been successful both in industrial deployment and selling of a large number of helicopters here.

The company, which has a representative office in Bangalore, is planning to "expand further and set up a subsidiary in India," says a notice on the company's website.

However, neither the investment nor the time frame for setting up the subsidiary has been mentioned.

EADS, which is also the parent company of the aircraft-maker Airbus Industrie, is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of 31.8 billion euros and employed a workforce of about 1.10 lakh.

Bruno Boulnois, general manager (India) of the company said, "India is one of our strategic markets. We are about to hire qualified workforce to quickly implement an efficient organisation in Bangalore."

The setting up of the centre is line with the company's business focus for the current year. According to Norbert Ducrot, vice-president (sales-Asia), Eurocopter, "In 2006, our focus in India will be to decisively increase our business platform by means of sales and by successful industrial deployment. We are currently discussing numerous opportunities for long-term industrial cooperation with Indian aerospace industry, specially regarding the 10 tonne-class helicopter required by armed forces."

The company has been associated with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) which has modified its Alouette and Lama helicopters to manufacture 600 Chetak and Cheetah helicopters.

The company has also been supplying rotor blades for HAL's advanced light helicopter, and has provided its Dauphin fleet of choppers to Pawan Hans.
