The country's first automobile recycling plant coming up on Chennai's outskirts is likely to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2011, President of Metal Recycling Association of India (MRAI) said here today.
"The first automobile recycling demo unit coming up at Sicot industrial estate on Chennai outskirts at National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP's) 300 acre vehicle testing track compound is likely to be commissioned in first quarter of 2011," said MRAI President Ikbal Nathani.
"This demonstration unit will help create awareness among the recyclers about safe disposal of automobiles, and will also serve as a model for industry," he said.
MRAI is amongst one of the industry bodies from whom Ministry of Heavy Industry, under which NATRiP functions, is taking feedback about safe disposal of automobiles.
"The demonstration unit of this automobile recycling plant is being jointly set up by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and NATRiP on the outskirts of Chennai," Nathani said.
"The plant coming up with an estimated cost of around Rs 1 crore comprises basic recycling unit for manual dismantling of vehicles in phase one, and a shredder plant that breaks down vehicle in small pieces," Zain Nathani, a member of MRAI said.
