Indian e-commerce major Flipkart has appointed former Google head of mobile search advertising Surojit Chatterjee as Head of Consumer Experience and Growth. Chatterjee will also be a part of the company's increasingly star studded leadership team, as it looks to build out a robust technology platform.
In his role at Flipkart, Chatterjee will be responsible for all consumer experience across mobile and desktop. News of his appointment comes just a day after the company said it hired ex-MakemyTrip CTO Sharat Singh and Microsoft cloud head Ravi Krishnaswamy in senior engineering positions.
Chatterjee, a former Googler, headed the company's global Mobile Search Advertising and AdSense for Search product streams. He helped build Google's mobile search ads platform, which today contributes to a significant portion of the company's revenues.
"His (Chatterjee's) experience helping build and scale a multi-billion dollar business from scratch, deep knowledge of product management, global ecommerce and tremendous expertise in mobile advertising will help Flipkart continue to deliver ever-greater customer experiences even as we rapidly expand," said Mukesh Bansal, co-founder and head of Commerce Platform at Flipkart, in a statement.
His appointment comes at time when Flipkart is increasingly looking at different avenues to earn money, apart from charging merchants a cut from every sale they make. Advertising is one of biggest alternative revenue streams the company is building out, with Sachin Bansal personally heading the push.
As competition in the Indian e-commerce space heats up, investors are increasingly piling the pressure onto large e-commerce companies such as Flipkart and Snapdeal to turn a profit. Both companies are working on multiple strategies to create additional revenue streams in order to fuel their past paced growth.
