The earlier version was introduced five years ago and sold 300,000 units. “The Figo was the face of Ford in India. The new Figo is made on a new platform and offers an outstanding value for money,” said Nigel Harris, president and managing director at Ford India.
Figo will be the only hatchback in India to offer up to six airbags, while the base variant comes with a driver-side airbag. It boasts of an emergency assistance feature that uses sync and a Bluetooth-paired phone to call emergency responders automatically to provide information about the location. The top-end petrol version of the Figo will sell at Rs 6.4 lakh, while the top-end diesel version will sell at Rs 7.4 lakh. The petrol variant automatic transmission vehicle is priced at Rs 6.91 lakh. The prices are introductory and could be revised after the festival season. Ford launched its first compact sedan, Figo Aspire in early August and sold 5,500 units in the domestic market in the first month. “We are on track to do a similar volume of Aspire, this month, too,” said Anurag Mehrotra, executive director (marketing, sales, and service). Ford, which had seen its volume decline for a number of months, managed to post a 22.5-per cent jump in domestic sales in August, driven by sales of the Figo Aspire, launched in early August. Both the Aspire and the new Figo are being manufactured in Ford’s new plant at Sanand (Gujarat) that became operational early this year.
