The TimeWarner group-owned Fortune may soon be published in India. The magazine is in talks with Indian publishers for an Indian edition here. In addition to its US edition, Fortune publishes editions in Europe and Asia, as well as a Chinese language edition. |
"We are in talks with two-three Indian publishers. India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and has a large English-speaking population," a senior executive working with the magazine told Business Standard. He, however, declined to comment on the timeframe for such a venture. |
While the executive ruled out any possibility of a licensee agreement with the local publisher due to stringent regulatory norms, he said there were expectations that the government would liberalise the norms for increasing foreign direct investment in publication. |
"We are open for a joint venture or may provide 20 per cent of the content or go for a royalty over content to be provided for the Indian edition," the executive said, adding that the magazine was also in talks with the publishers in Korea and Japan for local editions there. |
The current circulation of Fortune magazine in India is around 9,000, which the company hopes to increase. |
Looking at the US market, the growth in print is comparatively stable, while the online subscription has increased. In Asia, the print edition is the dominant one. The executive added, "There is a possibility that one day our on-line edition will take over the print subscription." |
Currently, six companies from India including Indian Oil Corporation, Reliance, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, ONGC and SBI are among the Global 500 and China has 19 companies in the global list of Fortune. |
"With more and more Indian corporates going for overseas acquisition and expanding their base, a local edition will be a viable option," he added. |
Given the latest acquisition of Corus by Tata, there is a possibility that the company would make an entry into the Fortune Global 500 list this year. |
