Fresh capacity fuels NTPC bottom line

The country's largest power generating company NTPC today announced 27 per cent rise in net profit to Rs 1,474 crore for the July-September 2006 quarter compared with the same quarter last year.
 
The company's income during the second quarter rose 15 per cent to Rs 6,814 crore against Rs 5,926 crore in the same period last year.
 
"The growth has been good. We added 710 mw of generation capacity during the quarter. We will be adding 1,500 mw next quarter and another 1,500 mw in the last quarter of the year too," Chairman and Managing Director T Sankaralingam.
 
Commercial generation from the power plants of the company during the quarter was up 10 per cent to 42,609 million units of electricity.
 
Capacity utilisation at the company's coal-based power stations increased during the period, with a plant load factor (PLF) of 82.57 per cent against a PLF of 79.35 per cent for the same quarter in the previous year, a company statement said.
 
NTPC represents more than 20 per cent of the total installed capacity of the country.
 
The company plans to almost double this capacity to over 51,000 mw by 2012.
