GAIL India today announced that it would take up a 33 per cent equity participation in Ennore regassification terminal to be set up in Tamil Nadu. |
The terminal would be developed by a consortium comprising GAIL, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited and Indian Oil Corporation. |
GAIL will undertake marketing of 3 million metric tonne of regassified-liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) from the terminal. It would also construct, own and operate the entire pipeline required for marketing of R-LNG from the terminal, which expected to start supplies from 2009. |
GAIL is undertaking a detailed feasibility study for the project. The deep-water port at Ennore is compatible for LNG imports. A major advantage of this terminal is that LNG could be sourced from multiple countries such s Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. |
IOC, in fact, last month itself signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran's Petropars for jointly developing a proposal for the South Pars field. The gas could be received at the Ennore terminal which is expected to initially have a capacity of 2.5 million tonne per annum, said an official. |
The terminal will supply regassified LNG to prospective industries in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka which are willing to switch over from liquid fuel to natural gas. The Ennore power station, North Chennai power station, Tuticorin power station and Mettur power station are a few of the potential customers of the Ennore terminal. |
Against the current allocation of 6 million standard cubic metre per day (mmscmd) of gas, only 1.4 mmscmd was being supplied in Tamil Nadu. The current deficit of 4.6 mmscmd is besides the 25-30 mmscmd latent demand that could arise from potential customers in industry, power and desalination plants. |
GAIL has also proposed a pipeline from oimbatore-Erode-Salem-Dharampuri besides the Chennai-Bangalore and Chennai-Tuticorin lines planned to transport regassified LNG, besides a local network of 163 km (Kuttalam-Narimanan-Kovilallapal-Perungulam-Bhuvanagiri), which is under implementation. |
