CLICK HERE FOR VIDEOWith the formal commissioning of the third container terminal, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) will augment its capacity to handle containerised traffic of the country by 50%. JNPT handles over 58% of the container traffic in India.The third container terminal, known as Gateway Terminals India, is the largest container terminal in the country. It was formally launched today by Arun Bongirwar, chairman of Tariff Authority for Major Ports.The terminal, with a quay length of 712 metre, is designed to handle 1.3 to 1.5 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEU). JNPT, which operates two terminals including a private terminal, handled 2.67 million TEUs in last financial year.The third container terminal is a 74:26 joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR). APM Terminals is a part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. CONCOR is a public sector undertaking, and the largest provider of containerised rail transport in India. Gateway Terminals was developed on build own transfer (BOT) basis for 30 years. Tommy Thomsen, partner of A.P. Moller- Maersk A/S and chairman of APM Terminals, said: "Containerised trade is set to grow to 15 million TEUs by 2015 from a mere five million this year."
