Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which owns Brand Amul, today said it has achieved a landmark in milk procurement as the dairy co-operatives in Gujarat collected more than one crore litre in a single day on Thursday. This is the highest-ever procurement made by any dairy network in India on per-day basis. Prior to this, the highest milk procurement record was also made by GCMMF in January 15, 2007 at 89 lakh litre per day.The entire quantity of milk procured was processed into milk and milk products and no storage of the wholesome drink was done, GCMMF said."Year 2007 proved to be memorable for the company as it achieved the turnover of one billion, and also set a record of procurement of one crore litre of milk in a single day," the co-operative said in a statement. The growth in milk procurement accelerated further in the current year owing to better procurement prices paid by milk unions and favourable monsoon.Out of the 13 milk unions under its fold, Mehsana Milk Union has contributed the maximum in achieving the target as it is also the largest co-operative in terms of milk procurement and is handling 23 lakh litre of milk followed by Banaskantha Milk Union at 21 lakh litre of milk per day.The dairy cooperatives in Gujarat are paying higher prices of milk to producers (by Rs 2-3 per litre) compared to last year.
