The US-headquartered General Electric would focus more on railways and locomotives sector this year, a top company executive said.
"I think there is a lot of opportunity in that area for us to focus upon," GE India President and Chief Executive Officer John L Flannery told reporters here.
In October 2008, the group's arm GE Transportation and state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) joined hands to compete for a 1,000 diesel locomotive tender issued by the Indian Railways. The company was shortlisted by the Indian Railways to compete for this tender.
He recalled the firm's expression of interest made on the tender issued by the Indian Railways in 2008. "We expressed our interest in diesel and locomotive and went through multi-billion dollar tender process", he said.
He hoped that GE India would be a major player in railways and locomotives in the future.
Earlier, while delivering his acceptance speech after receiving the "Indo-US Business Cooperation Award 2010" instituted by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) and Sanmar Group, Flannery said the company intended to make more investments in local supplier and manufacturing to have a long time benefit.
"India with its huge talent pool is a giant resource for us and with the cost beneficiary and level of technical capability available here, we need to be more competitive. We need to make more investments in local supplier and manufacturing sector," Flannery said.
