To encourage farmers to implement modern agricultural practices and achieve higher crop yields at low cost, Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (GFCL) will honour farmers in the state with 'Godavari Rythu Puraskarams'. The awards will be given away to farmers in 17 districts this year, GFCL said in a press release.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and Rs 10, 000 for the best and second best farmers in each district. It is crop-specific and for a prominent crop grown in the district. For instance, in East Godavari district, the award will be given to a sugarcane grower whereas in West Godavari district, a paddy grower will be selected for the honour.

A total of 14 crops have been selected for the awards on the basis of the best practices. There are 15 criteria based on which a farmer would be given the award. These include application of fertilisers as per soil suitability, use of green manure, vermin compost, application of micronutrients, biofertilisers, adoption of best soil and water conservation methods, crop diversification, cultivation of new varieties, saving cost of cultivation and others.

A committee consisting of officials from the department of agriculture, agricultural university and GFCL will select the winners at the end of the crop season. Farmers who wish to participate in this competition may get their names registered with a GFCL dealer in their area before May 31, 2006, the release said.
