Gitanjali Gems, a Mumbai-based diamond and jewellery maker and retailer, launched its ‘Saksham PWD (people with disabilities)’ training centre for jewellery manufacturing and diamond processing in the Rajiv Gems special economic zone (SEZ) in Hyderabad on Sunday.
The training centre, inaugurated by state minister for major industries, commerce and export promotion and food processing Kanna Lakshminaranyana, is integrated within the company's 100,000-sft factory premises in the SEZ.
“The training centre will be a boost to our efforts to increase the employment of PWDs within the industry. We believe that the factory and the SEZ project will boost economic development and also aid the underprivileged sections of society,” said Gitanjali Group chairman and managing director Mehul Choksi.
Gitanjali Group already employs nearly 200 PWDs in its Hyderabad factory.
The company plans to increase this to over 1,000 in the next three years. The trainees are provided with all amenities like food, accommodation and transportation, Choksi said in a press release here today.
The Rajiv Gems SEZ, country’s first privately-owned and managed jewellery SEZ, houses about 100 diamond, colour stones, pearls, semi-precious stones, jewellery and jewellery-watch manufacturing units.
