General Motors India has temporarily closed the production at its plant located in Halol near Vadodara. The plant has been shut for about a fortnight. However, the company officials have maintained that the closure is a routine exercise and it is not a fallout of ongoing global meltdown.

"There will be no production at company's Halol unit for about two weeks," said P Balendran, vice-president, General Motors India. The company is said to have shut the production at Halol from 13 December to 30 December.

Earlier, the closure was for seven to 10 days but this time around the duration is longer on account of Christmas holidays and weekends, according to Balendran.

It may be mentioned here that GM's November sales witnessed a dip of 19 per cent amid global recessionary pressures.

"The ongoing closure is not due to recession but we can not say what will happen in days to come," he added.

GM's Halol plant operates in two shifts a day and it has production capacity of 220 units per day.

"Barring Spark, U-Va and Chevrolet Captiva, sales of GM's other models took a hit in November," he said.
