After the success of its small car Chevrolet Spark, US auto major General Motors may launch a second small car in India within two years. The proposed small car may not be launched under the Chevrolet brand, a senior company executive said today. The proposed small car will also not compete directly with Tata Motors' Nano but will be cheaper than GM's current lowest priced car in India, David Reilly, group vice-president, General Motors, said today."The Nano has definitely opened discussions in the automobile industry all over the world about the sales potential of such low-cost cars. Many companies, including ours, is looking what we can do with our own cars to lower cost from some of the existing categories that we currently have. We will, however, not come out with a car to directly compete with Nano," Reilly said.Asia-Pacific currently constitutes about 7% of the total market share of GM's global operations, and India, with its huge growth potential, will definitely help in increasing the share, he added. The Spark was launched in April 2007 with a price tag of Rs 3.10- 4.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The company produces just under 2,800 units a month of Spark, which forms 35-40% of the company's total output from the facility. Other products in the company's portfolio include the U-VA, Aveo, SRV, Tavera, Optra and Captiva."We are still in some negotiations, and we will go ahead and announce it probably in another two months. Currently, our Halol plant in Vadodara is having a capacity to roll out 60,000-85,000 cars per annum. Once these are on board, we are planning to have a capacity addition of another 140,000 cars per annum, " Reilly said.
