GMR energy has been awarded a major hydel project in Himachal Pradesh, after the company paid Rs 82 crore to the state government as premium upfront money today here.

The 180-Mw Holi-Bajoli hydel project is to be built on the Ravi river in Chamba valley, some 400 km from here, said the company officials.

The cheque of Rs 82 crore was handed over to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh by GMR Energy's Director BVN Rao here on Monday. "Work on the project will start sometime next year and it will be completed by 2014," he said.

"It will be a 'run of the river' project and on completion will supply power to the northern region of the country. The region has recorded a high demand growth but faces a large power deficit," said Rao.

The project has been awarded to the company on build-own-operate-transfer basis for a period of forty years from the start of commercial operations.
