The department of tourism is planning to develop an aqua marine park and a golf resort at Tannirbavi beach, about 12 km from Mangalore for an investment of over Rs 300 crore. The department has planned to develop an 18-hole golf course and a five star hotel as part of the project through a public private partnership mode.

“As envisaged in the tourism master plan we are planning to develop an aqua marine park-cum-golf resort at Mangalore. We have prepared an action plan to attract investment from the private sector for the proposed project,” a senior tourism department official said.

The department has been given 155 acres at Bengre village near Mangalore where the Tannirbavi beach is located. About 25 acres will be used for the aqua marine park and the golf resort will be spread over 130 acres. It plans to develop an 18-hole golf course at this place, which will see an investment of about Rs 250 crore. A 50-room five star hotel will be part of the golf resort, the official told Business Standard.

“As the project falls under the coastal regulation zone (CRZ), we need clearance from the Union ministry of environment and forests before starting the project. We have made a presentation to the CRZ committee under the ministry and waiting for their approval. Once the approval comes, we will float tenders for the project,” he said.

While the department of tourism will provide the required land for the project, the private sector participant will have to invest the money to develop the golf resort. The project will be tendered through the Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation Ltd, which has hel ped the department to prepare the tender documents.

The department of tourism has also identified 10 places, where it holds land, for development of tourism infrastructure like hotels and resorts.

The state-owned Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), is also developing ‘golf tourism’ packages to attract international travelers to the state. It intends to launch a new tourism circuit for avid golfers. To begin with, the corporation will promote Bangalore, Mysore, Belgaum, Chikmagalur and Madikeri as the preferred golf tourism destinations.
