The government today started the process of appointing a new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), who need not be from the government. So far Trai chairmen have been mostly retired IAS officers.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) today issued an advertisement for the post. Current Chairman Nripendra Misra retires on March 22, 2009.
Considering the fact that the government is open to professionals, a senior DoT official said the idea is to leverage on the experience and knowledge of the person.
Earlier the government formed a committee headed by Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrasekhar to find a replacement for Misra. Other members of the committee include Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister TKA Nair, DoT Secretary Siddhartha Behura and representatives from the Department of Personnel and Training among others.
The applicant, the government says, must have special knowledge and professional experience of telecom, industrial matters, finance, accountancy, law, and management.
The applicant may or may not have served the government, said the advertisement. The search panel can also look beyond the advertisement for the suitable candidate.
The last date for sending the application is March 6, 2009.
