Govt yet to recover over Rs 570 cr commercial tax

The Gujarat government on Thursday told the state Assembly that there were as many as 288 companies against whom commercial tax of more than Rs 2 crore is due. These include industrial houses like Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), Reliance Industries Ltd, Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) which sells products under brand Amul.

Finance minister Nitin Patel gave information regarding due commercial tax against the companies in a written reply to a question raised by Congress MLA from Chhota Udepur Mohansinh Rathwa.

Rathwa had asked for names of companies against whom commercial tax of over Rs 2 crore was due as of January 15, 2013. In his reply, Patel gave a list of 288 companies which fell under the category. He further clarified that the tax was due from different industries over different time periods. Patel assured the house that process of recovering the tax dues from the respective companies was on. However, the list provided by the minister did not include the tax amount due against each company.

Some of the major companies or industrial houses included in the list besides AEL, RIL and GCMMF are J K Laxmi Cement Ltd, Apollo Tyre, State Bank Of India, Asain Paints Ltd, Novartis India Ltd, Johnson & Johnson, Pepsico India (Holding) Pvt Ltd, Nestle India Ltd, Dishman Pharmaceuticals, GAIL, ABB Ltd, ONGC, Essar Steel, J K Paper Ltd, Aditya Birla Nuvo and others.
