Hyderabad-based Granules India Limited, a fully-integrated pharmaceutical formulations manufacturer, is setting up a compression and coating facility in Gagillapur at an approximate cost of Rs 35 crore. The facility, once completed, is likely to be among the largest in Asia in terms of capacity.

Speaking to Business Standard, N R Ganti, director of Granules India, said, "We are setting up a facility in Gagillapur that will have a capacity to manufacture 12 billion tablets a year."

At present, most of the pharmaceutical companies in India can manufacture two to three billion tablets a year. This facility, therefore, is likely to be among the largest in Asia, he added.

"The facility will take one-and-a-half-year to become operational. We are developing it in two phases. In the first phase, the capacity of the facility will be six billion tablets a year. Later, it will be scaled to 12 billion tablets," Ganti said.

Granules recently raised an amount of $ 8.65 million through a GDR issue. A part of this finance will be used to set up this facility which, according to Ganti, will help Granules to cater to the existing and increasing requirements of global pharmaceutical companies.

Granules has clients in around 40 countries to which it supplies Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Pharmaceutical Formulation Intermediates (PFIs) and finished dosages of tablets and capsules.

The company has manufacturing plants in Bonthapally, Jeedimetla and Gagillapur dedicated to the manufacture of APIs and PFIs. In Gagillapur, Granules also has a facility for manufacturing one billion tablets a year. "All our facilities are GMP-compliant and the upcoming facility is also being developed on the same lines," Ganti said.

The pharmaceutical formulations major manufactures around 40 products and according to Ganti, earns around 40 per cent of its revenues from the US, followed by Europe, Australia and other South East Asian countries.

Granules clocked a turnover of Rs 128.55 crore for the 15-month period ending on June 30, 2004. For the six-month period ending December 2004, it has achieved a topline of Rs 62.37 crore out of which around 82 per cent has been from exports.

"For the next fiscal, we are targetting a growth of 30 per cent," Ganti said.
