With funds set to be disbursed again under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) soon, the Powerloom Development & Export promotion Council (PDEXCIL) is eyeing over 50,000 more powerlooms in Gujarat.
"TUFS which was kept under abeyance is expected to receive funds from the Central government soon. Moreover, the Scheme for Integrated Textile Park (SITP) is also being planned again. Buoyed by such schemes, we are eyeing over 50,000 more powerlooms to be set up in Gujarat," said Bharat Chhajer, chairman of PDEXCIL.
According to Chhajer, cotton and synthetic powerlooms combined, there are currently over six lakh units in Gujarat. Of these around 50,000 cotton powerlooms are in Ahmedabad and other North Gujarat regions. "Most of the looms to be added in the state are expected to be automatic and shuttle-less," Chhajer added.
More number of powerlooms in near future are likely to boost the other verticals in the value chain of textiles like processing. "The growth in powerloom business will boost other verticals including ginning and processing as well" he added.
