Gujarat Pipavav setting up RoRo automobile yard at Pipavav Port

The 250,000 vehicle yard scheduled for commissioning in Q2 2015

In a bid to expand its services portfolio, APM Terminals-operated Gujarat Pipavav Port, with NYK Auto Logistics (India), is setting up an automobile yard at Pipavav Port.

Under the arrangement, NYK Auto Logistics (India) has been sub-leased land by Gujarat Pipavav on the port premises for developing a common user-integrated RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) terminal, the latter said in a release on Saturday.

A RoRo terminal caters to ships designed to carry automobiles, trucks, and railroad cars among others vehicles.

The yard is expected to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2015 and will be provided with all port and related facilities by Gujarat Pipavav Port, said the release.

“We are committed to increasing our existing service portfolio from container, bulk, liquid and now automotive cargo. NYK is a proven leader in operating auto terminals worldwide and has an extensive fleet of RoRo ships offering regular sailings to and from the major ports around the globe. We are happy with this association,” the release said quoting Prakash Tulsiani as saying.

The release did not mention the funding details for the yard project.

The RoRo yard at Pipavav with annual designed capacity of 250,000 vehicles shall operate 365 days x 24 hours and be equipped with dedicated custom bonded area and CCTV cameras for security of cargoes. The staff operating the terminal shall be trained to global standards for cargo care to meet the stringent quality requirements of automotive customers.

"NYK shall implement global best practices at Pipavav RoRo terminal and support the growth of automotive exports from India under Prime Minister “Make in India” initiative,\" the release quoted Naotaka Ishizawa, managing director of NYK Auto Logistics (India) as saying.
