In a bid to consolidate its leadership position in the wall tiles segment, H & R Johnson India Ltd (HRJIL) is targeting a rise of over 50 per cent in its wall tile business by the end of this fiscal.

The company is shifting its focus to the wall tile markets. At present, the company sells wall tiles under its flagship brand 'Johnson'.

The company's aggressive marketing initiatives are aligned to its ambitious target of crossing Rs 500 crore turnover by March 2005. For the financial year ended 2003-04, the company notched a turnover of Rs 441 crore, which was the highest ever turnover recorded by any ceramic tile company in India.

"The wall tile market is highly segmented with a large number of players, mostly from the semi-organised sector, operating with very few products. The product life is very short for the limited brands available in the market. Also, designs and product features in this segment are easily duplicated. Thus sustenance in this extremely competitive segment is a game of innovation." Vijay Aggarwal, Managing Director, H&R Johnson India Ltd told Business Standard.

To embark on this market share acquisition plan H&R Johnson has launched India's first water repellent tile Monoporosa under its Johnson brand. This launch follows the company's year long research on the issue of maintenance of bathroom tiles.

"Wall tiles in the Indian context largely occupy the bathroom as compared to any other place in the house. Maintenance is a major issue as there is water or moisture present throughout the day on the walls. Through our research we have formulated a special recipe through which the product is attributed with water repellent features. With the launch of Johnson Monoporosa, we plan to resolve the maintenance problem to a great extent," said Aggarwal.

The company has also launched a number of other wall tile products in the mid-size segment, which include designer wall tiles.

The key drivers of this growth will be Marbonite slabs, Porselano tiles with rotocolor technology and Johnson Monoporosa.
